Tenure track assistant professor position in California: interdisciplinary applied ethics

Deadline: November 15, 2018

A tenure-track assistant professor position in Applied Ethics is currently available at UC Merced, in the University of California system. The focus is of particular relevance to Philosophy of Science, but they encourage interdisciplinary candidates. I understand they would seriously consider candidates from STS as well.

Please don’t respond to me with queries. Instead, for questions specifically about the Applied Ethics position, contact Carolyn Dicey Jennings: cjennings3@ucmerced.edu.

So if the position might interest you, but you’re not sure if your research focus is relevant, do contact Dr. Jennings, as their defintion of the focus appears to be quite open and inclusive.

Assistant Professor of Cognitive and Information Sciences (4 Positions)

(3rd position) “Applied Ethics: We are seeking candidates who take an interdisciplinary approach to ethics, applying ethical theories and principles to topics within the purview of CIS. Sample topics might include neuroethics or the ethics of technology. Applied ethicists working on topics outside the scope of CIS who use scientific methods will also be considered (for example, someone who draws on large data sets). Applicants will be expected to contribute to the undergraduate philosophy program (http://philo.ucmerced.edu).”

The Department of Cognitive and Information Sciences (CIS) at UC Merced seeks applicants for four (4) tenure-track faculty positions at the Assistant Professor level. CIS is a highly interdisciplinary group offering bachelor’s degrees in cognitive science and philosophy as well as an intensive research-based PhD in Cognitive and Information Sciences (http://cogsci.ucmerced.edu/). We seek outstanding scholars who will establish and maintain creative research paradigms, participate actively in the development of interdisciplinary programs, and teach and mentor effectively at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Applicants must have either a strong research record or evidence of the potential to develop an independent and innovative research program.

Salary is commensurate with education, experience, and UC academic salary scales.

For additional information, please contact Ramesh Balasubramaniam: ramesh@ucmerced.edu.

Applicants must hold a PhD in a relevant discipline — such as Cognitive Science, Psychology, Philosophy, Neuroscience, Linguistics, Computer Science, or Anthropology — by the position start date.

The anticipated start date for this position is July 1, 2019.
